Paddle Through Florida’s Living Light Show

Our Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour takes you onto the calm nighttime waters of the Banana River Lagoon, one of the best places in Florida to experience this natural wonder for yourself. Over a 1.5-hour guided tour, you’ll paddle through mangrove-lined channels and quiet pockets of the Thousand Islands as the lagoon comes alive after dark.

In summer, billions of microscopic dinoflagellates glow with every movement in the water. Your paddle becomes a paintbrush and pulls bright blue-green light through the lagoon as fish dart around your kayak in quick flashes of surreal light. Even a gentle sweep of your hand can leave a luminous trail drifting across the surface.

When the weather cools, the experience shifts. Harmless comb jellies drift through the lagoon, emitting subtle pulses of light as you paddle through their habitat. Their faint, refracted colors catch with each movement of the water, creating a quieter but equally captivating form of bioluminescence.

Guided by passionate and experienced local guides and using stable, beginner-friendly kayaks, this tour brings you close to both forms of bioluminescence in Cocoa Beach, while revealing the unique ecology that makes the Banana River Lagoon so remarkable. You’ll see every glow up close and learn what makes this rare ecosystem one of the most impressive natural phenomena in Florida — and why this tour is the best bioluminescent kayaking Florida has to offer.

Perfect for beginners, families, couples, or anyone wanting a front-row seat to nature’s nighttime light show, this top-rated tour is one of the best things to do in Florida and a truly unforgettable Cocoa Beach experience.

Evening Launch

Your evening begins at the launch site, where you meet your guide, get fitted with your gear, and receive a brief orientation on paddling and nighttime safety. Once everyone is ready, you glide onto the still waters of the Banana River Lagoon and settle into an easy pace as darkness falls over the Thousand Islands.

Into the Glowing Lagoon

Your guide leads you through mangrove-lined channels and quiet pockets of the lagoon that offer the best conditions for viewing bioluminescence. As your eyes adjust, the water around you begins to glow — from the bright blue-green spark of summer dinoflagellates or the soft, pulsing light of winter comb jellies drifting beneath the surface.

You’ll have time to experiment, sweeping your hand through the water, watching fish streak beneath your kayak, and observing the unique glow active during your visit.

Stories From The Water

Throughout the paddle, your naturalist guide shares stories and insights about the Banana River’s wildlife, ecosystem, and why this lagoon is such a reliable hotspot for bioluminescent activity. The tour concludes with a calm return paddle under the night sky, giving you one last chance to watch the water glow before stepping back onto shore.

Frequently Asked Questions

No experience is required. This tour is beginner-friendly, and your guide will help you get comfortable before launching. The pace remains relaxed throughout, making it suitable for families, first-timers, and seasoned paddlers.

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, so visibility can vary nightly. However, the Banana River Lagoon is one of Florida’s most reliable bioluminescent locations. In summer, dinoflagellates often produce bright blue-green trails of glowing water, and in cooler months, comb jellies create softer pulses of refracted light. Your guide will always take you to the areas with the best visibility that night.

Yes! Children ages 3+ are welcome when riding in a tandem or triple kayak with an adult. Single kayaks are available for teens aged 13+. Weight limits apply to each kayak type.

No. This is a leisurely-paced tour designed for comfort and enjoyment, not athletic intensity. Expect gentle paddling through calm water, mangrove tunnels, and sheltered lagoons.

We constantly monitor the weather right up until tour time. This includes forecast and real-time precipitation, lightning and winds. As tour launch time approaches we pay special attention to the current radar outlook.

If heavy precipitation, lightning and/or wind might lead to unsafe conditions we may go into a 30 minute weather hold and/or cancel the tour. Your guide will be in touch about 45 minutes prior to the scheduled launch time to provide updates. If we cancel we will work with guests to reschedule to another day and/or time but if not possible we will issue a full refund.

Start times vary seasonally but generally begin 1+ hour after sunset to ensure full darkness. Your exact meeting time and location will be provided in your confirmation email.

Yes. The Banana River Lagoon is calm, shallow, and protected — ideal for nighttime paddling. Each kayak has required safety lighting, and your guide carries additional gear and chooses routes specifically suited for night conditions.

Wildlife sightings are possible on bioluminescence tours but not common. Manatees are typically in a hidden rested state but some tours are lucky enough to see dolphins streak through the bioluminescence. It’s a sight one doesn’t forget.

It will be dark — that’s what makes the bioluminescence visible. You’ll have the required safety lights, but overall, the experience is intentionally low-light to preserve your view of the glow.

Expect light splashes from paddling or from running your hands through the glowing water. You won’t be submerged, but quick-dry or water-friendly clothing is recommended.

Dress for the weather and cooler evening temperatures. Wear comfortable, protective clothing and bring a reusable water bottle. Insect repellent is recommended. Phones and cameras can struggle in low light, so manage expectations if you plan to photograph the glow.

No. Unlike our daytime tours, nighttime bioluminescence tours do not include photos due to low-light conditions. You may bring your own device, but capturing bioluminescence can be challenging.

Yes! During the summer dinoflagellate season, the glow can be extremely vivid. During comb jelly season, the light is gentler and more ethereal. Both are easily and clearly visible from your kayak.

Group sizes are kept small — typically 12–16 guests — to ensure a more personal, relaxed, and wildlife-friendly experience.
